I certainly learned a lot from this class and what it means to be a journalist. What I thought was going to be most challenging for me, but actually turned out being somewhat easy was the writing. I am someone who dreads writing, because I am a perfectionist but the AP style was very helpful to how my mind works. The most challenging part of the class for me was the interviewing aspect. This was a bit hard for me, because I have social anxiety and it is hard to build up the courage to talk with random people on my own unless I am forced to do it. Though I do try to keep up with what goes on in the world around me through social media like Facebook, I sometimes forget to take the time to see what is going in Chattanooga. Our media writing class helped me to check what goes on in my local area through many platforms like News Channel 3.

Overall, I have learned many things in my Media Writing class. If I had to say something that was my favorite thing I learned, it would definitely be the journalistic approach to writing. I am an english minor, so my writing career has been very MLA themed. I learned AP format which was interesting because I had never even heard of it before this class. I also learned some new things about interviewing which was nice because I most definitely was afraid of this before taking this class. There was this one time when I was trying to interview someone and I got so intimidated that I just left. I now feel confident to avoid these types of scenarios. Honestly, this blog assignment might be my favorite thing we have been assigned to do at this point in the semester. Though I am now comfortable with all of these new techniques, this is where I thrive. For example, I have my own blog. However, this class has also taught me how to be aware of things going on around me, especially in Chattanooga by using other various sources such as the Times Free Press. I think what was something that became fun as a whole class was learning the names of the various government representatives in Chattanooga as well making us generally more aware. I know for a fact that none of us will ever forget the name Jim Coppinger. With all of that being said, don’t forget to check out my blog. I post on it rarely but they’re quality posts nonetheless!

My name is Drew Daniels, and I took Media Writing I this semester. This class has been one of my favorites and through it I have learned so much. I am a communication major, but as to what I want to do, I am not sure. I want to do something in relations to film, but whether that be directing, or writing articles about movies I am uncertain. The bottom line is, through this class I have learned some good interviewing skills and data collecting skills. I am not sure if I will need these skills for whatever path I take, but I know that they are super helpful regardless. As I continue as a major here at UTC, I am sure that I will take more classes like this one that will challenge me to take more courses that involve these very skills. As much as I like writing, I think that if I were to do something more like a video interview, I can still apply the skills even though I do not need to write on paper. The basic interactions I have had with people are so useful as I move further into this field. Just the basic knowledge of what to say and the proper and improper ways of interviewing someone are so helpful. My favorite site to find all my movie information is on IMDB. I could see writing some pieces for them or the Hollywood reporter someday, but other than that, I would prefer my name to be in the credits for the film.
